TAN Tianwei graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Tsinghua University in July 1986. After qualifying upon graduation as a Master degree candidate, he proceeded to pursue his Ph. D. studies in the Tsinghua University in September 1987. From February 1990 to October 1992, he was enrolled in a joint Ph. D. program in Germany’s Biotechnology Research Institute and Sweden’s Lund University. He received a Ph. D. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Tsinghua University in March 1993. From May 1993 to May 1995, he undertook Postdoctoral research in Biochemical Engineering in the BUCT. From March 1997 to August 1997 and from January 1998 to April 1998, he worked at Sweden’s Uppsala University twice as visiting scholar.
TAN Tianwei started to teach in the BUCT in 1995. In the following year, he was turned into a full professor and began to serve as Head of the Department of Biochemical Engineering in the School of Chemical Engineering. In 2003, he became Dean of the College of Life Science and Technology. In November 2007, he was promoted to the role of Vice President of the BUCT. Professor Tan has served as President of the BUCT since June 2012.
Professor TAN Tianwei has long been involved in the teaching and research of Biochemical Engineering and Industrial Biotechnology. In 2001, he became a Distinguished Professor under the Changjiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education. In 2003, he won the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. In 2006, he received the Science and Technology Award for Chinese Youth and the Advancement Prize of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation. In 2007, he became the Chief Scientist of the Project 973 on “The Basic Research of the Process Science of Industrial Biotechnology”. In 2011, he was elected to be an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Professor Tan Tainwei also served as Vice President of the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China (CIESC), Vice Director of the Specialized Committee on Biochemical Engineering of the CIESC, Standing Vice President of the China Education Association of Chemical Industry, Director of the Colleges and Universities Work Committee of the China Education Association of Chemical Industry. Professor Tan Tianwei is also director of the Enzyme Engineering Society of China, member of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering, member of the Academic Committee of the State key Laboratory of Bioreactor, and member of the editorial boards of several core journals in Chinese or English.
Professor TAN Tianwei has undertaken many important research projects as the project leader, which include fourteen projects under the categories of the national technological projects, Project 863, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, and Project 973, and ten projects at the Ministerial level. He has published over 200 SCI papers and over 230 EI papers. He has been the first winner of two Second Prizes of the National Award for Technological Invention, and five First Prizes and five Second Prizes at the Provincial or Ministerial level.
